Who this weekend is for
Drivers from Sydney or Canberra who want tablelands river and lake time without a multi-day western plains commitment. Works year-round with different clothing; winter and shoulder seasons are quieter. Region guide: Upper Lachlan & Wyangala.

Packing & prep (night before)
- Confirm WaterNSW / operator notices if launching craft or camping lakeside
- Check lake level and ramp notes if day-boating
- Layers, sun protection, torch, offline maps for patchy coverage
- Groceries plan — Cowra shops are useful; lakeside inventory is limited
- If fishing: valid licence + current NSW DPI Fisheries notices (see recreation & safety)
Day 1 — Arrive & orient
- Morning / midday Drive from Sydney or Canberra toward Cowra. Fuel and lunch buffer as needed.
- Afternoon Check in. Short riverside walk in town or drive out to a public Lake Wyangala viewpoint to understand the scale of the storage.
- Late afternoon Easy dinner in Cowra; avoid dusk wildlife on unfamiliar roads.
- Evening Early night if fishing or launching early next day.
Day 2 — Water or garden (pick one primary focus)
- Option A — Lake day: Wyangala ramps when open; PFD discipline; fuel plan; stay inside your skill level on open water. See Lakes & boats.
- Option B — Culture day: Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre, POW history sites, town river parks.
- Option C — Fishing day: licence-first storage or bank session — see fishing weekend.
- A full boat day, a long garden visit and a late drive to Forbes is too much for one day. Pick one main focus.
Day 3 — Soft exit
- Morning coffee and one short stop only
- Optional Forbes sculpture or river park stop only if energy remains (see mid Lachlan)
- Return to Sydney or Canberra before the worst Friday/Sunday traffic if you can

Rain / wind plan
Switch to the Japanese Garden, POW history and Cowra cafes. Open-water days are not mandatory for a successful weekend. Check BoM and NSW SES if flood or storm weather is in play.
